Overview¶

Chartered enterprise under Tranos (Minister of Science and Technology for Hamilton County from Day 100; oversees Matthias's chartered companies from Day 101). Builds wind-powered mills, later lumber and paper mills, and operates mines in Cumberland.

Royal Charter & licensing (Book 01)¶

Day 64: Matthias seeks Royal Charter for Newtown Mill Company — anticipates five+ John Tinker crews year-round.
Built-by-company mills: No license fee if the Newtown Mill Company constructs the mill; customer owns mill free and clear after paying construction costs. Mill pays for itself in ~two years at lower flour prices (Day 86).
Self-build license: Fee for right to build with own labor and materials; modest profit on company-built mills.
Day 120–121: Count Morgan of Peterborough — lump-sum license (~10% below five-year value) for two mills plus training; fixed fees for distant counties.
Day 123: Tranos negotiates exclusive paper-mill charter and license term to recoup personal investment.

Millers Guild conflict (Days 106–123)¶

Matthias uses windmill efficiency to undercut the Millers Guild cartel:

Refuses Guild rate-fixing; offers priority mill construction instead.
Day 114: Guild demands two-year exclusive flour contracts or double price; Lilia orders emergency windmills on Sierra's land.
Day 122: Guild threatens boycott of Hamilton County goods; Matthias expects failure.
Strategy: expand Newtown Mill Company capacity (two mills per ten-day, Day 114 instruction to Tranos); end-run Guild via local farmer mills and excess-flour buy contracts (Day 90).
