Medicine & Healing

Healing sections through AROTD1 Chapter 94 (Story Day 123). Lisette's potions catalog through AROTD2 Chapter 74 (Story Day 232). Sources: canonical chapters plus author herbal compendium.

Overview

Healing in Nystria rests on herbalism, barber-surgeons, and midwives, with limited understanding of infection, anatomy, or pharmacology. Court and adventuring circles rely on skilled herbalists such as Lisette; serious muscle trauma, arrow wounds, and castration sentences go to barber-surgeons. Count Matthias imports OP texts, tools, and hygiene practices that outpace Realm-wide practice by centuries.

Nystria has no STDs (author world rule). Contraception and abortion are routine via silphium. Temple Purification ritual compounds (silphium, mandrake, hallucinogenic mushrooms) are a separate, political use of herbs — see Supernatural_Skills.md.

Practitioners (Book 01)

Role Name Location / notes
Healer, herbalist, alchemist Lisette Langford Manor compound; field care for the Company
Apprentice healer / alchemist Teresa Wickham origin; joins compound (Day 70); crop and herb-garden work
Barber-surgeon James Fulham; repairs Tristan's torn calf muscle (Day 15); writes follow-up instructions for Lisette
Midwife Elizabeth Lilia's midwife (Fulham/Newtown orbit); hand-washing campaign contact (Day 89+)
Farm-level wound care Sierra Washes wounds with salted water; bandages; sends for Lisette (Day 15)
Surgeon (Haven) unnamed Castration of Titus (Day 121); poppy extract + sleeping agent; healer applies post-op poultice
Combat-injury scholar unnamed surgeon from Pârsâ Matthias cites his concussion work (Day 91); contact likely unavailable

Planned hire: young barber-surgeon willing to reject routine bleeding and limit leeches (Matthias to Lisette, Day 89).

Facilities (Book 01)

Facility Status Notes
Herb garden Operating Langford Manor compound; Lisette and Teresa maintain it
Apothecary Planned Current Manor House after new Manor/Keep complete (Days 65–68)
Hospital Planned Same building — "a place people go for healing" (Day 68); basement clinic use develops in Book 02

Matthias also promotes indoor plumbing, showers, and self-cleaning privies as public-health infrastructure (Days 42, 75, 89).

Nystrian practice vs. OP knowledge

Topic Typical Nystrian belief / practice OP knowledge (Matthias → Lisette)
Infection Dirt, humours, occasional poultices Germ theory; invisible bacteria and viruses
Bleeding Common surgeon remedy Harmful, not helpful (Day 89)
Leeches Wide use Very limited legitimate uses
Willow bark Headaches, minor pain Aspirin; also stroke/heart-attack and chest-pain prevention
Poppy extract Severe pain Opium / morphine by refinement
Bread mould Wound poultice ingredient Penicillin when purified
Garlic, honey Wound care Antibiotic properties
Reproduction "Seed sown" metaphor Eggs fertilized by sperm; silphium induces miscarriage / lining shed
Resuscitation CPR (drowning); defibrillation centuries away
Diagnosis Observation, touch Stethoscope, microscope, oral thermometers (Day 94+)

Matthias's own OP medical literacy: First Aid, CPR, herbal-medicine history, and family medical guide — enough to surpass most Nystrian healers (Day 57).

Hygiene reforms (Days 63–85)

Day 63: Matthias tasks Lisette with a hand-washing campaign:

  • Midwives must wash hands with cake soap and wear a freshly laundered smock before every delivery.
  • Lisette must wash before and between patients and before making poultices.
  • Cooks wash before meals (Lilia reinforces in kitchen, Day 81).
  • Surgeons targeted but expected to resist (Semmelweis effect).

Public justification until microscopy is available: dirt causes infection, even in small amounts. Matthias issues a signed decree (via Jorah) midwives may show when challenged.

Day 85: Matthias explains germ theory (bacteria and viruses) to Lilia and instructs kitchen staff to wash hands and arms with cake soap before work and after each privy use, and to wear a freshly laundered smock daily — tied to planned plumbing and reduced disease risk.

Wound & trauma care (Book 01 examples)

Lucas — arrow wound (Day 15)

Lisette removes arrow, cleans, sews wound; common flax poultice for pain, inflammation, and healing. No surgeon required.

Tristan — wolf bite, torn calf muscle (Day 15)

Sierra: salted-water wash, bandaging. James (Fulham barber-surgeon) repairs muscle; half-moon bed rest. Post-op: Lisette monitors infection signs; healing poultices and sleeping draughts acceptable; avoid poppy extract unless necessary; willow bark extract fine.

Tyra — arrow through thigh (Day 105)

Ambush en route to Dal Valley: Tyra casts magic missile while wounded (surprises Karla); collapses from combined blood loss and spell cost. Lisette: thigh tourniquet (leather strip); poppy extract laced with sleeping agent; shaft cut and pulled through. Poultice: aloe, willow bark extract, garlic, bread mould. Later wound wash, fresh poultice; aspirin preferred over poppy for pain without drowsiness (Day 79).

Milos — poisoned dagger (Day 105)

Partial dose; vomiting; effects fade; wound washed and dressed.

Titus — judicial castration (Day 121)

Poppy extract + sleeping agent; surgical removal; healer poultice; guarded recovery.
